Synopsis[]
Sometime in the evening, Kaoru's grave is dug up for Aoshi to verify. He just cannot believe that Kaoru is actually dead from the contradictions he found in Megumi's story. One crucial fact is that nobody witnessed her murder when it should be the 'Coup de grâce' to carve into Kenshin's eyes. When he was leader of the Oniwa Banshu, Aoshi heard of a skill that very few people knew. It was a rare craftsmanship of how to assemble lifelike models using human flesh, fat, and bone. Gein's Iwanbou model Sansouke had left in the dojo's storage room was enough evidence for Aoshi to suspect the real Kaoru was not killed because it had begun to decay. Being the ethical doctor she is, an angry Megumi claims she checked over Kaoru's body and swears it was no model, but Aoshi doesn't believe one can make such assertions when someone close to them dies. Yahiko on the other hand, senses some truth in Aoshi's cross-examination with common sense and believes the chances of hope are not zero.
Yahiko opens up Kaoru's casket showing Kaoru's corpse is still in tact and Megumi double-checking it proving its no fake. But Aoshi wants to cut her open to certify the case. Megumi is totally against such a thing, but Yahiko isn't as he holds Megumi back and gives Aoshi the word. With his kodachi, Aoshi cuts into Kaoru, only to find a bunch of wires. That proves it; Kaoru is still alive, somewhere.
