Attack on Kanryū Manshion is the twenty-second chapter of the Rurouni Kenshin manga.

Synopsis[]

The Kenshingumi arrive at Kanryū's mansion, who is on the balcony watching in terror. Kenshin demands Kanryū let Megumi go, but Kanryū tries to negotiate with him instead. After Kenshin's refusal, he orders Aoshi to send the Oniwabanshū to fight, but Aoshi states the Oniwabanshū will fight but not for him. Aoshi goes to the room where Megumi is locked and gives Megumi her tantō, informing her that Kanryū plans to torture her, allowing her to choose between suffering for an hour or ending her life in an instant. What will happen with the Kenshingumi's plan to rescue Megumi?

Summary[]

Kenshin, Sanosuke and Yahiko have arrived in front of Kanryū's mansion, who watches Kenshin from the second floor's balcony in terror. The latter demands Kanryū to go down with Megumi, but Kanryū tries to convince him to work for him instead. Even though he offers Kenshin to pay him more and more (ending with a promise of paying him the same as 50 bodyguards), Kenshin refuses and insists for him to release Megumi.

Faced with Kenshin's refusal, he finally tells Kenshin that he will release Megumi in one hour after "making some arrangements", time that he secretly plans to take advantage of her to torture her and get all the information from her about how to produce the opium. Kenshin actually ignores that proposal and decides to break into the mansion.

In panic, Kanryū dismissively orders Aoshi to send the Oniwabanshū to stop Kenshin, which annoys Aoshi who claims that they will indeed fight, but they are not fighting for him. Then he goes to the room where Megumi is locked on the third floor and gives Megumi her tantō back, informing her that Kanryū plans to torture her for the next hour, allowing her to choose between suffering for an hour or ending her life in an instant.

Chapter Notes[]

This chapter has several differences with other portrayals of the events of the story in different iterations of the franchise:

Differences with the 1996 anime[]

  • In the manga Kenshin, Sanosuke and Yahiko fight with several guards each one on his own. This is in contrast with the anime, where Yahiko and Kaoru team up and they both fight with some guards while protecting each other.

Differences with Rurouni Kenshin: Origins[]

  • In the manga Kenshi, Sanosuke and Yahiko are at Kanryū's mansion. This is in contrast with the live action movie where only Kenshin and Sanosuke are storming Kanryū's mansion.

Differences with Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration[]

To be added

Differences with the 2023 anime[]

  • There are basically no differences from the manga to the anime episode that covers them.
