That Man, Kanryu! (あの男、かんりゅう!Ano otoko, kan ryū!)is the twenty-fifth chapter of the Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc manga.

Synooopsis[]

As the group is being guided to meet with Gatou, Asahi asks if Alan talks with Kenshin about a reward which Alan says that he did. Alan reveals that Kenshin wondered if they should be rewarded, which Sano says that its okay to reward him if they are able to capture the real Gatou. Ashitaro says that Gatou will pay them in advance, while Asahi says that she is good from here and there and Alan says that they evil, aren't they.

Kenshin comments about As the group arrive at Gatou's base, they are greet by Gatou. Kenshin is shocked that Gatou is Takeda Kanryu while Kanryu is shocked that the swordsman he is meeting is Kenshin, which both of them wonder why the other is in Otaru. Sano is shocked by this, while Alan wonders if the two know each other.

Back when the Kenkaku Heiki attacked the prison and let the prisoner decide if they want to escape, Kanryu had escaped with four other prisoners. As the five are running along since a river, they run into Shimonji. The prisoner notices that their are more member of Kenkaku Heiki with Shimonji, which the Kenkaku Heiki give the prisoner some swords. As a member of the Kankaku Heiki gives Kanryu a sword, Kanryu replies that he doesn't need that since he is not a beggar. The prisoners says that Kanryu can use a sword, which Kanryu replies that he is a merchant and he doesn't accept anything without the exchange of money. As Shimonji is confused with this, Kanryu says that their is no such thing as free and that he will buy ten time by using the money the he had hidden. The prisoners see this and wonder where Kanryu obtain that money, which Kanryu reveals that for the past five year, he has looks for them while cleaning the guards toilers. As Shimonji says that that is dirty, which Kanryu replies that Shimonji has no talent for business and that money is neither clean or dirty. Shimonji says that he will sell Kanryu too swords and tells the other prisoners that they should work for Kanryu are his limbs. As Shimonji and Kanryu make their deal, Shimonji says that he wants to see what kind of effect the Mantetsu Blade has on Otaru and tells Kanryu to sell these swords until they run out. Kanryu sasy that this is the first deal he has made in five year. Kanryu also says that this is his great comeback and that he will earn as much money as possible.

After Kanryu finished explains what happened, which Kenshin comments about how the Kenkaku Heiki is behind all of this. Kenshin and Sano comments about how Kanryu is still alive, which Kanryu explains how a golden key can open any door. Kanryu also says that he had lost all the money that he earned by selling opium and firearms, and that he now understands that he can't just do things illegally. Kanryu says that he will evade the law, which Sano punch him and says that Kanryu hasn't changed at all. Kenshin says that Kanryu doesn't intend to repent for all his crimes, which Kanryu says that he is doing nothing wrong since its not illegal to buy and sell swords like firearms. Kenshin says that breaking out of jail is illegal, which Kanryu says that it wasn't a jailbreak but an emergency evacuation from destruction. Kanryu points out that Kenshin has a habit of breaking the anti-sword law, which Kenshin is shocked about. Sano punches Kanryu again and tells his to stop grumbling since the people in Otaru are very troubled due to the swords being so widespread.

Sano also tells Asahi, Ashitaro, and Alan to not manipulate from both side for money again which the three agree to it. Kenshin asks Kanryu where the Kenkaku Heiki they brought the sword from is, which Kanryu says that he doesn't know. Sano tells him to spill it already, which the prisoners explains that the Kenkaku Heiki contact them once or twice a week and their is no other way to contact them. Sano asks Kenshin what to do, which Kenshin says that they have no other choice but to ambush the Kenkaku Heiki from here. Kenshin says that the prisoners will report this to the police tomorrow morning, and if they follow his plan then he will not reveal their connection to the Gatou Swords or that they were part of the prison break incident. Kanryu asks about if they refuse and that their is no way that they would just turn themselves in, which the prisoners comment about how they don't have much of a choice and that they are tired of taking orders from someone like Kanryu. Kanryu gets angry at them and calls them cowards.

Kenshin says that they will wait outside to ambush the Kenkaku Heiki, which Sano says that the one that makes the first move has the real advantage. Kenshin also says that Ashitaro and Asahi will buy food and other items while Alan keep a watch over Kanryu. Alan agrees to it, but says that he wants a proper reward. As Kenshin and Sano are surprised by this, Alan says that its only natural to be paid for their work. Kanryu claps his hands and sasy that Alan is right and that an extreme vice for merchants like them are selfless devotion. Kenshin asks if Alan wants to be like Kanryu, which Alan replies that he doesn't but he still wants money. Sano then explains that he will be fighting the Kenkaku Heiki while leaving the food soldiers to Kenshin and Ashitaro. Sano tells Ashitaro to be careful using with Mugejin since he has been trained to not draw it perhaps. Sano says that Alan and Asahi will watch over Kanryu so that he doesn't try to escape, which Kanryu tells him to not look down on him and asks if they think that he would act in such a shameful manner. Kanryu says that he would run away proudly, which Sano tells him to shut up.

Outside the base, a spring attached to the building send the conversation to the Kenkaku Heiki's Otaru base. Shimonji listens in on the conversation, which reveals that the group should contact the police and what to do if the Kenkaku Heiki doesn't show up. Shimonji comments about how that fierce warriors would come sooner or later, but Kenshin and Sano came here sooner then he expected. A member of the Kenkaku Heiki asks what to do next, which Shimonji says that they have no more use for Kanryu and that they should deal with Kenshin and Sano. Shimonji tells Ono to go greet Kenshin and Sano, while Honda goes to replace Kanryu and spread the next stock throughout Otaru. The two agrees and heads out.
