Chapter Notes[]
This chapter has several differences with other portrayals of the events of the story in different iterations of the franchise:
Differences with the 1996 anime[]
- In the manga, the entire sequence which May 14th begins all takes place at the Kamiya Dōjō, all when Kenshin is still doing his laundry. There is no walk with Gensai-sensei.
- In the manga there is no mention of the "Cursed Fireflies of Summer" and the promise made to see them with Ayame and Suzume (since they are anime original characters).
- In the manga Megumi makes her appearance only after Kenshin's discussion of Saitō and Ōkubo.
- In the manga Sanosuke is the only one present at the Dōjō in the beginning. There is no scene of him being woken up at his apartment.
- Sōjirō's assassination of Ōkubo is not shown in the manga. In the anime a short scene is shown, signifying that Sōjirō murdered Ōkubo by impaling him through the forehead.
Differences with Rurouni Kenshin: Kyōto Inferno[]
- In the original manga Sōjirō's assassination of Ōkubo is not shown. In the live action film there is a extended scene of Sōjirō running on the hills next to the road paralell to the carriage until he reaches it.
Differences with the 2023 anime[]

Trivia[]
- The events of this chapter paralell real historical events: The death of Ōkubo Toshimichi happened on May 14th 1878 by Shimada Ichirō and six other Kaga Domain samurai while Ōkubo was on his way to the imperial palace.
