Suddenly someone complements Alan from a larger Vase, which the guy explains how that is Gatou. Gatou points out that they don't have anyone that can teach people to wield a sword, which Alan, Ashitaro, and Asahi say that they know someone. The three then manages to get Gatou to meet with Kenshin.

As Honda launches more pages at the two, Alan and Kanryu quick take cover. As Alan worries about how they can handle Honda, Kanryu tells Alan not to worry and that he knows that weakness of a mass physical attack.

As Honda runs out of pages within his book, Kanryu says that he was waiting for this moment and fires a shot but the pages manages to block the bullet. Alan examines the pages and notices the pages are made of aluminum, and explains what aluminum is to Kanryu. Alan then starts to think about how what to do. Honda reveals that he has more books to use, but he will let them live if Kanryu begs for forgiveness and hands over all the money he has earned. As Honda comments about how the warriors send the money that merchants make, which Alan tells him that that is not true. Alan explains how the Kenkaku Heiki won't make the world a fair place, and that he is going to earn money and head to the shining heart of modernization. Alan tells Kanryu to run, which the two carry boards of wood to block Honda's assault. The two manages to reach the supply tent before the boards of wood are broken, which Alan grabs some gunpowder and proclaims that they are not going to give Honda anything.

Alan spreads the gunpowder around and proclaims that the gunpowder will protect them from Honda's metal pages, since he read about how metal sparks when they clash. As Honda throws another page and wounds Alan, Alan is shocked which Honda explains how Aluminum doesn't spark like other metals. Alan is then shocked when Kanryu starts to beg Honda to let them live, but notices that Kanryu is not touching the ground and realizes that Kanryu is protending to surrender. Alan tells Ashitaro, who arrived with Kenshin, to draw his sword to ignite the gunpowder which Ashitaro does. Alan manages to escape the explosion by hiding in a tent, along with Kanryu. Afterwards, Alan checks on Ashitaro and finds that he is okay but wonders where Honda is. As Honda reveals that he is still alive, Alan and Kanryu start to look for something to face Honda with. The two manage to find a Gatling Gun and confront Honda with it when Kenshin is about to face Honda. Alan then watches as Kanryu faces off against Honda. After Kanryu covers the gatling gun with a sheet, Kanryu continues his conversation with Alan and asks him to join him. Alan asks about Ashitaro, which Kanryu says that he doesn't need fools. Alan tells Kanryu he will have to pass, and explains that he and Ashitaro had made a deal together. Kanryu then tosses a coin to Alan and explains how its the first coin the he got from the bottom of the guard's toilet at Kabato Prison, which Alan freaks out. Kanryu tells Alan that in the he should visit the great merchant, Ringu Gatou, with that coin in the future were they have fallen so low that they are left to scavenge for leftovers, and he would bless them with an exquisite feast spiced with regret. Suddenly Ashitaro shows up and chases after Alan while Alan tells him to wait and that he can explain. While continuing to run from Alan, Ashitaro accidently creates another explosion which Alan is shocked by this.

Days later, Alan is at a restaurant with the others and discuss the matters that happened in Otaru. As Kenshin brings up the fact that Kanryu assets are being used to help rebuild Otaru, which Alan and Ashitaro comment about their reward. Kenshin says that he understands and that they will be paid a salary from the government, which Alan says that he understands and explains how since it's not a fixed salary, they can work hard and gets paid more if they produce results. When they order, Alan is shocked that Asahi was able to read the menu since he only taught her a few kanji. After Asahi explains how she figured it out, Alan says that it looks like he doesn't need to teach her anymore since she can learn on her own. Once the Nishin Soba arrives, Alan decides to order one too.

When they arrive back in Hakodate, Alan, Ashitaro, and Asahi decide to head out and spend their money. After spending most of their money, the three decide to head to the Hiyori-zaka. Asahi asks a man walking by, where the Hiyori-zaka is at. When the man says that he doesn't know and asks were the Shiryou-Kaku fortress is at, which Alan informs him. Alan then says that the Hiyori-zaka is this way and leave with Ashitaro and Asahi. Later, after they make it to the Hiyori-zaka, Alan heads out with the others to eat dinner.
