Kubota Asahi is a resident student of the Kamiya Dōjō in the 16th year of the Meiji period. Asahi was once a member of the Yaminobu and had served as a member of the Shishio Makoto army under the Yaminobu's orders.

Abilities[]
Asahi is a skill combatant that was trained by the Yaminobu. Asahi is skilled enough to take on both Ashitaro and Alan at the same time, but not enough to escape from them. Asahi is also a skilled information finder, as she was able to obtain information about Ashitaro and even trick Ono in really information about the Kenkaku Heiki's ability of the Brilliant Strength.
Asahi is capable of imitating other peoples voices but can also calculate the echoing of the voice so that is sound like the person talking to someone right in front of them.

Hokkaido Arc[]
Asahi is having a meeting with two of the leaders of the Yaminobu at the Akabeko, when she encounters Ashitaro. The two talk but are interrupted when Sako orders food and has Ashitaro go get it. Asahi then continues her meeting with the two, and explains why she didn't return to the Yaminobu after Shishio had died. Asahi hands them the money to buy her freedom, but the two reveal that its not enough. Suddenly Ashitaro returns with the food, which the two asks him to read the amount the is listed for Asahi to buy her freedom. Ashitaro says that he can't read and that he will go what Asahi says it is, which causes Sako to get angry. The leader tries to give Asahi a new assignment, but Asahi says that she doesn't want to do it and wants her freedom. Sako says that Asahi doesn't have the right to choose how they live, which Ashitaro suddenly attacks him. As a fight breaks out with the police called, Asahi tries to run away but is caught by the staff of the Akabeko. Later Asahi is brought to the Kamia Dojo, and Kaoru reveals that she will be a live in student of the dojo like Ashitaro and Alan. As she greets them, Ashitaro reveals that she can't read which Alan decides to teach her with Ashitaro and Kenji. After all the talking is done, Asahi heads to sleep in the same room as Kenji.
The next day, Asahi is learning to read with Ashitaro and Kenji when the topic of heading to Hokkaido to look for Kaoru's father is brought up. Alan wonders if they will head with Kenshin and Kaoru, which Asahi doesn't want to go.
On the day of departure, Asahi (along with Ashitaro and Alan is forced to goes with Kenshin, Kaoru, and Kenji which Asahi wonders why she is going. Kenshin hands them a letter from Yahiko that explains that they have to accompany Kenshin and Kaoru since they are live in students of the dojo. Three days later, the group arrives in Hokkaido which Asahi compliments about creepy mountain. The group then heads to the hotel that they will be staying at, but she doesn't like it and leaves to return to Tokyo with Ashitaro and Alan. The three arrive at the harbor and wonder how they will stowaway on the ship to Tokyo, when they notice Sako coming a shore and notices that they are surrounded by the enemy. Asahi and Alan get to safety, while Ashitaro deals with the enemy. Asahi watches as Ashitaro deals with the enemies and when Kenshin arrives, and comments about how she knew that Kenshin was the Battosai the Manslayer when Sako reveals Kenshin identity. Once the fighting is done, Asahi runs away instead of heading back to the hotel.
Days later, Asahi is at an orthodox church when Ashitaro and Alan find her. As the two want Asahi to return, Asahi doesn't want to and manages to take Alan hostage. Suddenly all their stomachs growl, which the three head out to get something to eat. After they finish eating, Ashitaro suggests Asahi returns with them to protect herself from the people that they faced a while ago. Asahi reveals that she is more afraid of Kenshin and explains the group that she was with is the Yaminobu. Asahi then tries to run away, but Alan and Ashitaro stop her. Later that night, the two manage to bring Asahi back to the hotel after Alan manages to convince her. Asahi meets with Kenshin and Kaoru, which the explain how they don't care about Asahi's past and will accept her.
The next day, Kenshin explains how the allies that he has called for won't be coming which Asahi agrees to lend him her strength. When Saito shows up, Asahi head to the Hekketsuhi monument with Saito, Kenshin, Sanosuke, Ashitaro, and Alan. When they are suddenly attacked by Cho and Kamatari, Asahi pulls Ashitaro and Alan to safety. After dealing with the two's attacks, Saito reveals that this was a test and that their will be more coming. Anji, Sojiro, and Nagakura Shinpachi shows up, which Asahi and Alan talk about the people that have showed up. After all the talking is done, Asahi listens as Saito gives a speech in from of the monument about how they will defeat the Kenkaku Heiki. Asahi then heads back to the hotel with Ashitaro, Alan, and Sanosuke, while Kenshin stays and talks with Saito and Shinpachi.
The next day, Asahi stays at the hotel while Kenshin and Sanosuke head off to interrogate Byakuya. Later Asahi is studying with Ashitaro and Alan, while Kenji watches over Kenshin (who is unconscious from is time interrogating Byakuya). When Kaoru and Sanosuke return, Asahi is informed that they will be heading to Otaru to stop the Kenkaku Heiki's operation there.
The next day, Asahi heads to Otaru with Kenshin, Sanosuke, Alan, and Ashitaro on horse back. Once they arrive at Otaru, Asahi listens as Alan explains how they are going to earn money while being in Otaru. The following day, Asahi is walking the streets of Otaru with the other when a fight breaks out and everyone pulls out a sword. Ashitaro tries to stop the fight but makes the people fighting angry, which Asahi stops Ashitaro and pulls him away. Asahi then watches as Sanosuke stops the fighting and has everyone drop their sword. When the police arrive, Asahi is brought to the officials office with the others and informed about the situation in Otaru. After hearing everything, the group heads back to the quarters which they talk about how the Gatou Swords are made and how Asahi, Ashitaro, and Alan are going to help searching for who is selling the Gatou Swords.
The next day, Asahi heads to the port with Ashitaro and Alan to earn some money from delivering fish instead of search for the sword seller. After an hour of work, Asahi stops delivering fish since she doesn't like the smell. An hour later, Ashitaro and Alan complains how Asahi had stopped an hour ago and how they are exhausted. When the three are approached by a person selling Gatou Swords, Asahi declines to buy one since she doesn't need one. Alan figures out why the selling is selling the sword at a low cost and asks to meet with Gatou to talk about money, which Asahi and the others are brought to the place that Gatou is at. Once they arrive, the group is attacked which Asahi deals with the sword seller while Ashitaro deals with the attacker. The kids are complimented on their strength, which Asahi listens as Alan talks with the people about a business deal in opening a dojo to teach people on how to wield a sword. Gatou compliments Alan, which the head clerk points out that that is Gatou. Gatou points out that they don't have anyone that can teach people to wield a sword, which the three reveal that they know a person and manage to get meeting with Gatou for Kenshin. The three then head back and tells Kenshin and Sanosuke about the meeting.
Later, Asahi and the others are guiding to the meeting place by the sword seller. Once their, they learn that Gatou is really Kanryu Takeda. After Kanryu reveals what happened after he escaped from prison, Sanosuke lechers the kids to not play the situation in order to earn money again.
The next day, Asahi and Ashitaro are running earns in town while the others wait to ambush the Kenkaku Heiki at the meeting spot. When another fight start, the two ignores it but are shocked when one of the fighter uses a gun to kill someone. The two rush back and inform Kenshin about what they saw in town. They go to talk about what happened with Kanryu, but are suddenly attacked by a member of the Kenkaku Heiki (Ono Tomitaka). Sanosuke decides to deal with the enemy while Asahi secretly stays, as the other head to town. When Sanosuke is knocked out by Ono, Asahi uses the chance to trick the Ono into reveals some of the Kenkaku Heiki's secrets before being caught. Asahi then leaves as Sanosuke gets up to finish his fight with Ono.
Days later, Asahi is with the others at a restaurant discussing their time in Otaru. When Kenshin reveals that most of Kanryu assets were used to help rebuild Otaru, Ashitaro and Alan complains about their reward from it. Kenshin says that they will be paid a salary from the government, which Asahi says that its better then nothing. Kenshin then asks what they want to order, which Asahi says that she will order the Nishin Soba. As Alan and Ashitaro are shocked that Asahi had read it, which Asahi explains how she figured it out which they compliment her for.
After they arrive back at Hakodate, Asahi, Ashitaro, and Alan head out to spend their money. After spending most of their money, they decide to head to the Hiyori-zaka and Asahi asks someone for directions. The man says that he just arrived in Hakodate and asks them about the Shiryou-Kaku fortress. After giving the man directions, Asahi bids him farewell and leaves with the other two since Alan knows were the Hiyori-zaka is at. Later Asahi heads out with the others for dinner.
