He failed to become the style successor after failing to execute the Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki properly against his master's Kuzu Ryū Sen, which resulted in him being knocked into a waterfall and left for dead. But he survived and reunited with his sister and her family, who were members of a hidden Christian cult. He adopted the Amakusa siblings after their parents were murdered for being affiliated with the Christian faith, they fled to Europe and Hyō-e deciding to pass on his swordsmanship skills to Shōgo per the boy's pleas.
For seveal years, Hyō-e wished for his nephew to liberate the oppressed Christians of Japan; however, after learning of the extreme methods which Shōgo intended to pursue in order to materialize this dream, Hyō-e reprimanded his nephew and attempted to stop him. However, Shōgo easily defeated his uncle and master, leaving him in a state of blindness.
