Rurouni Kenshin: Master of Flame (炎を統べる -るろうに剣心・裏幕- Honō wo Suberu Rurouni Kenshin Uramaku- , lit. "Controlling Flame -Rurouni Kenshin: Hidden Chapter-") is a two-chapter Japanese manga written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. It is a spin-off of the main Rurouni Kenshin series detailing the background of how Shishio Makoto met Komagata Yumi and formed the Juppongatana.
The chapters were published in Shueisha's Jump Square in July and September 2014 before Shueisha collected the chapters in a single tankōbon volume. In North America, Viz Media published the chapters in their Weekly Shonen Jump digital magazine.
Synopsis[]
Depicts how Yumi came to meet Shishio. It is revealed in this short story that Yumi's family was killed by Shishio himself, and that in order to borrow Shishio's powers, she made a deal with him that he could take her life whenever he wanted. Enishi also makes a cameo at the end of the second chapter, in a scene depicting how Shishio and Hōji acquired the Rengoku.

- Full depiction of Shishio's final technique Kaguzuchi, which was interrupted (both in the manga and anime) by Kenshin towards the end of their fight.
- More background is shown on Yumi and different interactions from characters such as Sadojima Hoji.
- Sōjirō and Hōji appear alongside Shishio. While the rest of the Juppongatana are given cameos near the end of the story
- Introduction of characters connected to Yumi such as Hanabi, her best friend. As well as Hanabi's twin children Akari and Kagari.
- Though not romantically connected, Sadojima Hōji apparently felt attachment to Hanabi and reflected upon her death.
