Tsunan & Nishiki Paintings is the 19th episode of the Rurouni Kenshin 2023 anime adaptation.

Synopsis[]

Sanosuke and Tsunan enter the Internal Affairs Department to bomb it, but Kenshin is there to stop them. After some fight they retreat, and Tsunan is knocked out. When he wakes up later that night (next to Sanosuke), his bombs are gone. Tsunan argues with Sano and runs away tring to commit seppuku at the Internal Affairs Department. Sano searches for him and they both fight while Sano tries to teach Tsunan some sense about the new era. Can Tsunan snap out of his hatred and trauma for the fate of the Sekihōtai? What will he do with his future now that his plans are busted by Kenshin?

Anime Notes[]

  • There are significant differences in the events of the second half of this episode between the anime and the manga:
    • In the original manga Tsunan just wakes up in his room and realizes all his revolutionary ideals are over. This is in comparison with the anime, where he thinks about commiting seppuku and runs away.
    • In the original manga Sanosuke and Tsunan talk about how to keep livng in the new era. This is in comparison with the anime, where Sanosuke and Tsunan have a fight in the river shore.
    • In the original manga it is briefly shown that Kenshin buried the bombs at day. This is in comparison with the anime where it is shown that Kenshin is taking the bombs on a carriage and burying them on the forest at night.
    • The scene of Sanosuke carrying Tsunan and Kenshin denotating one bomb as fireworks is anime orignal. That was not present on the manga.
    • That flashback scene of Tsunan and Sanosuke fighting as kids while the Sekihōtai members watch is anime original. It is not present in the manga.
    • In the anime there is a post credits scene with Ōkubo Toshimichi at the Internal Affairs Department wondering if Shishio Makoto was behind the bombs attack. This was not present on the manga.

Trivia[]

  • The title of this episode is a reference of the title of the previous episode of this anime adaptation, which itself was after the name of the original Acts 45, 46 and 47 of the manga.
  • This episodes uses flashback scenes of Episodes 15, 2, 14, 10, 8 and 18.
  • This is the seventh series episode with a post-credits scene showing some government officials presided by Ōkubo Toshimichi wondering if the attack on the Internal Affairs Department was done by Shishio Makoto and his followers.
