Lieutenant Ujiki is the former commander of the Tokyo Sword Bearing Police and a former samurai from Satsuma who fought for the Ishin Shishi during the Meiji Revolution.
Appearance[]
Ujiki has an average size build, with short brown hair.
Ujiki wears a green police cap with a red trim and yellow symbol in the middle, a green police jacket with two yellow lines at the end of each sleeves, green pants (White in the anime), a black belt that holds his sword, and black shoes.
Personality[]
Ujiki is an arrogant man, who thinks highly of himself and looks down on others. Ujiki is willing to attack anyone for any reason, like a low ranking policeman talking back to him or having his men attack innocent citizens just so Kenshin would draw his sword. Ujiki is also a bloodthirsty sadist that enjoys killing people, and proclaims that he is doing it to keep his skills from getting dull.
Relationships[]
- Sword Bearing Police: Ujiki was the leader of the Sword Bearing Police, before they were disbanded.
Abilities[]
Ujiki is a trained swordsman, and a practitioner of the Jigen-ryū. It is unknown what Ujiki is capable of, since he was swiftly defeated by Kenshin.
History[]
When Satsuma's samurai were absorbed into the Japanese police force, Ujiki was granted a high rank among Tokyo's officers for his service and, in 1878, when Hiruma Gohei went on a murderous rampage in the city under the guise of Hitokiri Battōsai, the lieutenant was placed at the head of a new corps of Tokyo policemen with the authority to wear sabers and use them if necessary. However, Ujiki and his men abused their power and lorded their swords over the civilians as if their defunct samurai status were still in effect, even after Hiruma Gohei had been arrested.
Tokyo Arc[]
When the regular police pursue and corner Himura Kenshin for wearing his Sakabatō, Ujiki leads the Sword Bearing Police into the situation unnecessarily and takes command, attempting to goad Kenshin into a sword fight so as to show off his abilities. When they threaten Kamiya Kaoru and the crowd of bystanders finally convinces Kenshin to draw, Ujiki displays his own sword style - Jigen-ryū - but is clearly outmatched and struck down with one blow from Kenshin's Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū "Ryū Kan Sen" (Dragon Coil Flash). He is subsequently dismissed, the sword bearing police are disbanded and he is presumably arrested.
Trivia[]
- Ujiki, being a Satsuma samurai during the Bakumatsu, was technically in the same band as Kenshin's (who was a Chōshū Ishin Shishi) during the revolution. Nevertheless, Ujiki is extremely antagonistic towards Kenshin, which is also appropriate as the alliance between Chōshū and Satsuma was born out of a common goal and the two, in reality, had a fierce rivalry that goes back several centuries.
